Why McCain will lose the election.

I saw a banner like this on the floor of the Republican National Convention. There were many such banners. It has a typo.

The punctuation mark is incorrect. It’s an open quote, not an apostrophe. An apostrophe is required when the year is shortened to two digits, because it is a placeholder for something left out. Just like a contraction.

That is why McCain will lose. The Punctuation Gap.

Finally, a typography subject! The font appears to be Omega or Optima, (which are the same really, [but you already know that]). If you type the apostrophe as part of word it does display as an apostrophe but if there is no letter preceding it, it displays as an open quote. The solution of course would have been to type a letter before the apostrophe 08 to force the apostrophe and then delete the superfluous letter.

If people actually cared about typography these days you might have a point about your election prediction. But hey, the PA is kerned beautifully, don’t you think?

The PA looks too tight to me, but they did make an effort, so I have to give them credit there. I know that smart quote technology automatically makes that an open quote, but not fixing it is just lazy.

I believe that aesthetics work on a subconscious level, so millions of voters who will say, “White-Haired Dude is too old! I’m voting for the other guy!’ are actually subliminally appalled at the lack of Republican punctuation skills.

Are you implying that Paris Hilton is a typographer?
