Battlestar Galactica’s favorite curse word is getting around. Maybe one day it will be banned by some overzealous idiot censor.

The word has slipped the bonds that tethered other pretenders like Mork’s “shazbot” in “Mork & Mindy” or Col. Sherman T. Potter’s “horse hockey” in “M*A*S*H.” Its usage has moved from the small but fervent group of “Galactica” fans into everyday language. It’s shown up in very mainstream shows like “The Office,” “Gossip Girl” and “Scrubs.”

Kudos to Glen Larson for dodging the censors and giving his actors a word they can say with authority.

One Response to Frak!

  1. Jason says:

I just can’t get behind the “frakking” sensation because they shouldn’t have to dodge the censors in the first place. The three big no-nos on American TV are graphic violence, sex/nudity, and swearing.

Violence is bad. I understand not showing that.

Boobies aren’t bad, but I can understand if people don’t want their kids exposed to that sort of thing. And sex can sometimes lead to bad things (rape, unwanted pregnancy, etc.).

Nobody was ever wounded or killed by a swear word. Are they low and unrefined? Sure. So is some gangsta saying, “Yo homey, wassup?” and they don’t censor that.

Every time I hear “frak,” it’s just a grating reminder of how useless it is. Can’t stand the word.
