Let’s talk about “f*ck.” (NSFW)

Now that my blog posts go out to Twitter and Facebook and all the ships at sea (if you don’t get that last reference, you’re too young), I feel it my duty to label this post with the initialism “Not Safe For Work.”

It’s about the word “fuck.” I warned you.

This delightful article, “Why it’s so hard to put sex in the dictionary,” is written by the author of a book called “The F-Word” that I intend to buy someday. It’s delightful because it’s that rare article about a dirty word that doesn’t shy away from using that dirty word (like I did in my blog title). Excerpt:

One major problem dictionary editors face in defining sexual terms is deciding how explicit to be. Defining coitus as “an act of sexual intercourse” but leaving sexual intercourse undefined, for example (on the grounds that a reader could figure it out from the definitions of sexual and intercourse), would be a problem, not only because it makes the reader do too much page-flipping but also because the definitions probably still won’t be sufficiently clear.
